What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is an effective method of achieving change; it is a valuable tool for self-empowerment and continuous personal growth.
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique which allows a trained professional (a qualified Hypnotherapist) to assist you in accessing your subconscious mind; creating meaningful and long-lasting positive changes in your life.
Hypnotherapy is both a natural state of mind and a process in which you and the Hypnotherapist work together to promote positive change.
As long as there have been human beings, there has been hypnosis. Hypnosis is experienced by everyone, whether by accident or intentionally. It is the state of consciousness you enter and exit throughout your day to day experiences; it feels very much like day-dreaming i.e., the mind-state between sleeping and waking.
For many years, hypnosis was primarily associated with stage theatrics; whereby an entertainer would select audience members to put into a trance. Consequently, hypnosis developed an unpleasant reputation in the perception of the general public.
More currently, hypnotherapy has been re-evaluated and is now viewed as a useful technique in assisting to:

Hypnosis is considered to be “a state of selective thinking”, whereby you are in control and can choose to experience only what is relevant to the task at hand. It has also been described as guided concentration; a state of heightened suggestibility (alpha-state) in which your brain-wave vibrations slow and allow you access to the subconscious mind.
We have all experienced the power of the subconscious mind. The causes for many of our “bad habits” are rooted in memories or perceptions that have been forgotten by the conscious mind but not the subconscious. Hypnosis assists us in accessing those memories and help to change those habits, quickly and easily.
While in a hypnotic state, your conscious mind (the mind you are reading and thinking with now) is temporarily by-passed and you gain access directly to your subconscious mind. Through hypnotherapy, your subconscious mind becomes highly receptive to positive suggestions and beneficial ideas; essentially re-educating yourself at a fundamental level. These suggestions are a combination of the goals you want to achieve, behaviors you want to change and a mind-set you want to develop. While under hypnosis you are still in control of your thoughts and actions, and will only accept suggestions and integrate changes that are appropriate for you; whether mentally, physically, spiritually or emotionally. It is a consensual state from which you can emerge at any time of your own choosing.

Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy have existed for thousands of years in many forms and can be found in numerous references from ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome. Although hypnosis is an ancient process, the modern medical use of hypnotherapy was sanctioned and formally recognized by the American Medical Association in 1958; was termed as a complementary healing modality by the British Medical Association in 1955 and the American Psychiatric Association in 1961.
Hypnotherapy is the process through which you become deeply or lightly relaxed and are guided by words, phrases, suggestions and imagination. Many different techniques are used in Hypnotherapy, from direct and indirect suggestion through to indirect metaphor and the most common feeling expressed after a session of hypnotherapy is one of profound relaxation and peace.
